Well, here it is, the Tail of the Whale – Hole 3B, Pacifico, Punta Mita. The only natural island green in the world. The hole plays 199 yards from the back tee, out over over the Pacific Ocean to a black lava rock island that’s accessible only by a six-wheel, amphibious cart at low tide.
The tee marker informs you that: «You are about to play the world’s only natural island green. Course Designer Jack Nicklaus describes 3B as ‘probably the best par 3 I’ve ever designed.’ We hope 3B will be a hole you never forget.»
There’s no doubt about it, it’s a hole you’ll never forget. To stand on the tee and look out over the ocean and contemplate a seemingly impossible shot is daunting, exciting and infinitely pleasurable. In actual fact, it’s not as tough as it looks. Handicapped 15 on the card it requires no more than a straight shot and a carry of not much more than 180 yards. Way to go Jack.
