Two fresh courses made their debut on our Swing this year: the historic Lake Merced Golf Club, thanks to the well-connected Carlitos, and Pacific Grove Golf Links in Carmel, a local public course that came highly recommended (we can check it off our list now—not to return). We also returned to familiar favorites: the Olympic Club Lake Course, the rolling heritage of Pasatiempo, and the ultimate trio—Cypress Point, Spyglass Hill, and the icon of public golf, Pebble Beach.

The seven-course lineup offered the perfect mix of challenge and beauty, surrounded by coastal views, towering pines, and the ever-changing rhythm of Northern California weather.

While the competition is always friendly, there’s no denying the intensity. For four years, Hugo Martínez had reigned supreme. But 2025 started rough for Hugo—an uncharacteristic 86 at Lake Merced, followed by a sluggish round at Olympic. The rest of us—Mauricio (“El Compadre”), Jose Luis, and myself—were practically tasting victory, especially with Hugo pulling double duty as the designated (and debatably competent) driver.

After a shaky front nine by Hugo at Pasatiempo, the tide looked certain to turn. But, as anyone who’s played golf with Hugo knows, he’s never really out. Despite losing his iPhone and rangefinder, he found his rhythm and never looked back.

The highlight? A stunning 75 at Cypress Point, complete with five birdies—including two hole-outs, one from the bunker on the 9th that had us all speechless. Jose Luis’ majestic shot from 120 yards on that same hole, followed by a textbook birdie, was another unforgettable moment.

I’ll never forget my own back-to-back pars on 15 and 16 at Cypress—or winning Closest to the Pin and sinking a proud par on Pebble’s iconic 7th. Mauricio put on a clinic off the tee at Olympic, outdriving Hugo all day—a rare feat that earned him a few bragging rights on the ride to Pasatiempo.

The women joined in the action as well, with two rounds at Spanish Bay and Spyglass Hill. Anne impressed with a solid 93 at Spyglass, while Rosana strung together some brilliant pars at Spanish Bay. Sabine, fresh from some practice sessions in Punta Mita, showed great consistency, keeping pace with style and grace.

We soaked up the stunning views and cocktails around the firepits at the Inn at Spanish Bay, celebrated with Negronis for Carlitos, vodka martinis with blue-cheese olives for Jose Luis, and savored every bite at Peppoli. We had more time to explore Carmel’s culinary treasures this year: standout meals at La Bicyclette, Pangea, and a perfect finale at Grasing’s, all washed down with Napa Reds and French Bordeauxs.

Of course, we also celebrated birthdays for Alejandra, Sabine, and Jose Luis, which made the Swing feel even more festive.

Despite the rocky start, Hugo stormed back to claim his fifth straight California Swing title, proving once again why he wears the crown. Jose Luis, always the motivator, claimed a noble second. I finished third, just one and a half points behind, with my driver refusing to cooperate. And bringing up the rear this year was Mauricio, losing both the trophy and some wallet weight in the process.

But golf aside, the trip was—as always—about the memories. From the songs and jokes in the car rides to lost items (phones, sweaters, golf clubs… you name it), it’s these moments that make the California Swing what it is.

Next year, we’re shaking things up: the first leg of the Swing will move to Las Vegas, but our beloved Carmel coast will remain the heart of the experience. To the ladies—Sabine, Rosana, Ale, Anne—thank you for joining this “trip of your dreams.” To Sabine, for organizing our accommodations. To Jose Luis, our eternal motivator. And to all the Compadres: here’s to more pars, less lost gear, and unforgettable rounds ahead.

Los siete campos ofrecieron la mezcla perfecta de desafío y belleza, rodeados de vistas costeras, imponentes pinos y el clima cambiante del norte de California.

Después de unos primeros nueve hoyos tambaleantes en Pasatiempo, parecía que todo cambiaría. Pero como cualquiera que haya jugado con Hugo sabe, nunca está realmente fuera de competencia. A pesar de perder su iPhone y su medidor de distancia, recuperó su ritmo y no volvió a mirar atrás.

¿El punto culminante? Un impresionante 75 en Cypress Point, con cinco birdies, incluyendo dos embocados, uno desde el bunker en el hoyo 9 que nos dejó sin palabras. El majestuoso tiro de Jose Luis desde 120 yardas en ese mismo hoyo, seguido de un birdie de libro, fue otro momento inolvidable.

Jamás olvidaré mis pares consecutivos en los hoyos 15 y 16 de Cypress—o haber ganado el Closest to the Pin y lograr un orgulloso par en el emblemático hoyo 7 de Pebble. Mauricio dio cátedra desde el tee en Olympic, superando en distancia a Hugo durante toda la ronda—una hazaña poco común que le valió varias bromas (bien merecidas) durante el camino a Pasatiempo.

Las mujeres también se sumaron a la acción, con dos rondas en Spanish Bay y Spyglass Hill. Anne brilló con un sólido 93 en Spyglass, mientras Rosana encadenó varios pares espectaculares en Spanish Bay. Sabine, recién salida de unas sesiones de práctica en Punta Mita, mostró gran consistencia, jugando con estilo y elegancia.

Disfrutamos las vistas espectaculares y los cócteles junto a las fogatas del Inn at Spanish Bay, brindamos con Negronis para Carlitos, martinis con aceitunas rellenas de queso azul para Jose Luis, y saboreamos cada plato en Peppoli. Este año tuvimos más tiempo para explorar los tesoros culinarios de Carmel: cenas destacadas en La Bicyclette, Pangea, y una cena de cierre perfecta en Grasing’s, todo acompañado de excelentes Napa Reds y Bordeaux franceses.

Por supuesto, también celebramos los cumpleaños de Alejandra, Sabine y Jose Luis, lo que le dio al Swing un toque aún más festivo.

A pesar del inicio difícil, Hugo regresó con fuerza para reclamar su quinto título consecutivo del California Swing, demostrando una vez más por qué sigue siendo el campeón. Jose Luis, siempre el motivador, obtuvo un merecido segundo lugar. Yo terminé en tercer lugar, a solo un punto y medio, con mi driver saboteándome todo el camino. Cerrando la tabla este año quedó Mauricio, perdiendo tanto el trofeo como algo de dinero en el proceso.

Pero más allá del golf, el viaje fue—como siempre—sobre los recuerdos. Desde las canciones y bromas en los traslados, hasta los objetos perdidos (teléfonos, sweaters , palos, distant finders bolsas de palos… ¡de todo!), son estos momentos los que hacen del California Swing algo único.

El próximo año, le damos un giro a la ruta: la primera etapa del Swing se muda a Las Vegas, pero nuestra querida costa de Carmel seguirá siendo el corazón de la experiencia. A las chicas—Sabine, Rosana, Ale, Anne—gracias por sumarse a este “viaje soñado”. A Sabine, por organizar nuestros hospedajes. A Jose Luis, nuestro eterno motivador. Y a todos los Compadres: por más birdies, menos objetos perdidos y muchas rondas inolvidables por venir.
